| This page is dedicated to the places I have stayed during walking trips as I
wish to give a first person account when recommending places to stay to others.
The guide includes a personal opinion covering hospitality, food and rooms. If
you have any plans to do the long distance walks we have done then you can view
the appropriate listing. Long Distance walk accommodation is listed in the order
you will need to book them. Please note the guide is a little dated in places. For example the Coast to Coast section includes places I stayed in 1999! However, I am working on a much more comprehensive up to date version which will feature walkers favoured places with feedback to add support to the good and varied accommodation available. |
| Coast to Coast Walk (prices based on two persons sharing) |
| St Bees - Outrigg House (Price: £18.00pp, B&B, 1999) Tel: 01946 822348 Web
Page:

| Ennerdale Bridge, Lake District - 6 Ehen Garth (Price: £18.00 pp, B&B, 1999)
Telephone: 01946 861917 The proprietor, Miss Sherwen has done a fair bit of travelling herself, including Egypt. She is a lively character indeed. The accommodation is fair and as is usual for most walking proprieties a good english breakfast is brought to you on a plate in the morning. |
| Rosthwaite, Lake District - Borrowdale Youth Hostel (Price: £11.00 pp, BB &
Evening Meal, 1999) Telephone: 01768 777393, Web Page:
Borrowdale Youth Hostel I don't mind youth hostels but you must be prepared for dormitory life unless you're organised and book rooms (if they are available) in advance. Snoring from bush beaten walkers can spoil some nights when all you want to do is sleep! The advantage is they are cheaper and more social than traditional B&B places. I've had many a great night swapping walking anecdotes in the company of fellow hostellers. Also you get a dinner as well as a breakfast for the price. Definitely recommended if you are working to a tight budget. Borrowdale is one of the biggest and best of hostels set in secluded woodland near to the river and not too far from the two pubs of Rosthwaite village. |
| Rosthwaite, Lake District - Oak Cottage - (Price: £16.50 pp, B&B, 1999)
Telephone: 01768 777236 A real quaint Beatrix Potter like tiny cottage with a genuinely nice lady owner. If you are taller than 5'10" then don't forget to duck when walking through doors in the house! Idyllic setting in the village close to, but sheltered from the pubs. The rooms are excellent and the breakfast awesome. |
| Patterdale, Lake District - Patterdale Youth Hostel (Price: £11.00 pp, BB &
Evening Meal, 1999) Telephone: 01768 482394, Web Page:
Patterdale Youth Hostel Near the main road at the eastern end of the village. Six persons rooms. Good basic fare. As with most hostels there is porridge and a small English breakfast provided in the morning. |
| Shap, Lake District - New Ing Lodge (Price: from £12.50, 2008)
Telephone: 01931 716719 New Ing Lodge offers comfort and luxury with a modern style at an affordable price. We have en-suite rooms, as well as two bunkrooms with beds for £12.50. Situated on the Wainwright C2C, and easily accessible for northern and eastern fells. Mountain bike hire discounted for guests. |
| Patterdale, Lake District - White Lion Hotel (Price: £16.00 pp, B&B, 1994)
Telephone: 01768 482231 Its a few years since I stayed but I dine here every time I'm in Patterdale. The food is good with generous servings. Rooms are roomy with TV and en-suite available. |
| Kirkby Stephen, East Cumbria - Redmayne House, Silver Street, Kirkby
Stephen, Cumbria, CA17 4RB (Price: £18.00 pp, B&B, 1999) Telephone: 01768
371441) Located in Silver Street near the centre of town this is a walkers favourite and justifiably so. The rooms are spacey and clean. The breakfast is excellent, and the house itself full of interest. There is a large common room with a good selection of magazines and walking books to read. The town itself has plenty of pubs and restaurants offering good choices of food. |
| Keld, Swaledale, North Yorkshire - Keld Youth Hostel (Price: £10.00 pp, BB &
Evening Meal, 1999) Telephone: 01748 886259, Web Page:
Keld Youth Hostel First and foremost, Keld is a dry village. There are no pubs and shops so pack provisions for two days when you leave Kirkby Stephen. The village does have a variety of accommodation for Coast to Coasters and Pennine Way walkers as the paths cross here. Personally I've stayed at the hostel twice and had two good social evenings. Food is good although I could easily have eaten bigger portions after a heavy days walking. |
| Reeth, Swaledale, North Yorkshire - Grinton Lodge Youth Hostel (Price:
£12.00 pp, BB & Evening Meal, 1999) Telephone: 01748 884206, Web Page:
Grinton Lodge Youth Hostel A cut above your average hostel. The building was formally a shooting lodge and stands out above Reeth resembling a small castle. The accommodation is good and the food the best hostel food I've ever eaten with lots of extras for the really hungry. Add this to the splendid surroundings and views you get of the area. This hostel has the feel of a hotel and I have no reservation in recommending it. |
| Glaisdale, North Yorkshire - Arncliffe Arms, 1 Arncliffe Terrace, Glaisdale,
Whitby, YO21 2QL (Price: £28.00 pp, B&B, 2003) Tel: 01947 897555 Web Page: Arncliffe Arms Email: info@arncliffearms.co.uk The pub is a great place to stay as it is directly on the route of the Coast to Coast and an ideal stopping place for your first night if travelling west or your last night if travelling east. It has recently acquired new owners, been completely refurbished and all six bedrooms upgraded to en-suite with TV and tea and coffee facilities. The pub welcomes Coast to Coast walkers and is well worth the effort to call in. |
| Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire - Meadowfield Guesthouse (Price: £18.00
pp, B&B, 1999) Telephone: 01947 880564 A very clean house with tidy rooms, although my attic room was small. Also, the blasted seagulls kept me awake half of the night with their squawking! At least the usual full English breakfast awaits the rising walker. |
| Cornish Coast Walk (prices based on two persons sharing) |
| Cawsand, Plymouth - Halfway House Inn, Fore St, Cawsand Bay, Kingsand,
Torpoint, PL10 1NA (Price: £24 pp, B&B, 2002) Tel: 01752 822279, Email:
Halfway House A pub with rooms upstairs. Nice and clean rooms. We stayed in a room for 3 with one double bed and two bunks. Food is served in the pub although we got in too late and so had to make do with sandwiches. A good breakfast menu. I had the awesome grilled haddock. |
| Looe, Cornwall - The Ship Inn. Looe (Price: £25 pp, B&B, 2002) Tel: 01503
263124 A pub right in the hustle and bustle of Looe High Street so be prepared for some noise until some time after the pubs have shut. Our room was huge with two single beds and a pull out bed settee. Everything was very clean and tidy. Breakfast was good. |
| Fowey, Cornwall - Marine Guest House, 21 Station Rd, Fowey, PL23 1DF (Price:
£22.50 pp, B&B, 2002) Tel: 01726 833920, Web Page:
Fowey Marine Guest House Email:
Frances Rose A little bit of a walk out of town but its well worth it. The house has several floors and the top two are provided for accommodation. Our room with two single beds and two bunk beds had access to a delightful terraced garden. The hosts were pleasant and equipped us with a hearty breakfast to see us on our way. |
| Portloe, Cornwall - Mrs Leach, Carradale, Portloe (Price: £22.50 pp, B&B,
2002)Tel: 01872 501508 A modern detached house, home of a lovely couple who catered for our every need. I was bushed when I arrived after walking 27 miles and was treated like royalty, waited on and provided with copious pots of tea. There is sky TV to watch or a library if you prefer. This choice is highly recommended. Gorgeous rooms, all en-suite. Excellent catering. A walkers paradise. |
| Mawnan Smith, Cornwall - Carwinion Veal, Grove Hill, Mawnan Smith, Falmouth,
TR11 5ER (Price: £20.00 pp, B&B, 2002) Tel: 01326 250513 A grand house on the edge of this small village, four miles from Falmouth. Hosts were a little grandiose but friendly enough. Our room was a little cramped. The bathroom was another matter, plenty of room to lounge in self indulgence. A good breakfast selection is available. |
| St Keverne, Cornwall - White Hart Inn, St Keverne, TR12 6ND (Price: £25.00
pp, B&B, 2002) Tel: 01326 280325,
Email: whitehart@easynet.co.uk A lovely public house set in the quaint village square of St Keverne. The room was ok but better for two than three as we had to employ a camper bed. If there are three of you then knock a star off the rating. Great mine hosts, very friendly. Food was very good. |
| Mullion, Cornwall - Meaver Farm, Mullion (Price: £25.00 pp, B&B, 2002) Tel:
01326 240128, Email:
meaverfarm@eclipse.co.uk A brilliant experience to stay here. The accommodation was a working farm until a few years ago and has retained all the charm of its past. The hosts were superb. Tea was provided on our arrival and breakfast was excellent. The rooms and beds were unbelievable and bathroom incredible. Exceptional. |
| Penzance, Cornwall - Yacht Inn, Green Street, Penzance, TR18 4AU (Price:
£20.00 pp, B&B, 2002) Tel: 01736 362787, Web Page:
Yacht Hotel A 1920's building reflecting a location for an Agatha Christie whodunit. The rooms were fairly good providing the usual facilities. Ours were both en-suite. A good breakfast was provided. |
| St Just, Cornwall - The Old Sunday School, Cape Cornwall Street, St Just,
TR9 7JZ (Price: £25.00 - £35 pp, B&B, 2003) Tel: 01736 788444, Web Page:
Old Sunday School Email:
nancymeehan@hotmail.com This accommodation is highly recommended by Manfred Schaefer, a walker from Germany whom I correspond with. He says "we had a wonderful time in Cornwall and have enjoyed every day. One of the most enjoying things was the accommodation in St. Just, where we met Nancy and Danny. They offer the Old Sunday School, a wonderful B&B. If there is any possibility to forward this recommendation to walkers I would be grateful. Thanks again for hosting us. Your house was one of the highlights of our walk. Hope the contact to Mike and the walkers association helps" |
| The Dales Way (prices based on two persons sharing unless stated otherwise) |
| Menston, Ilkley - Mrs Watson, Chevin End Guesthouse, West Chevin Road, Menston, Ilkley, LS29 6BE
(Price: £30 pp, B&B, 2007) Tel: 01943 876845 I've not stayed here but the guesthouse welcomes walkers and has excellent reviews in the guestbook on their web page at Chevin End Guesthouse. The Guesthouse is an eight bedroomed barn conversion complex adjoining Chevin End Farm. Set in a rural location it has panoramic Wharfe Valley views yet is only one mile from the towns of Otley, Menston and Guiseley, and less than half a mile from the main A65 Leeds / Ilkley road. As stated the patrons welcome all walkers and can provide packed lunches and drying facilities. |
Yockenthwaite - Mrs Middleton, Low Raisgill Cottage, Raisgill, Buckden,
Skipton, North Yorkshire, BD23 5JQ (Price: £23 pp, B&B, 2003) Tel: 01756 760351 A remote setting for this picturesque cottage which is situated about 600 yards from the Dales Way path in Yockenthwaite. Accommodation is scarce in these parts but we were lucky to find this place. Our en-suite twin room was excellent and the beds very comfortable. Tea and coffee making facilities were provided. Breakfast was very good. Mrs Middleton even provides a lift, for a small fee, to and from the nearest pub, which is over a mile away in Hubberholme but don't expect to stay out before 9.45 or you're walking! |
| Dent - Sun Inn, Main Street, Dent, Sedburgh, LA10 5QL (Price: £18.50 pp,
B&B, 2003) Tel: 01539 625208, Web Page:
The Sun Inn Email:
thesun@dentbrewery.co.uk A gorgeous pub in a fantastic little dales village. The twin room we were allocated was lovely and well looked after. Tea and coffee making facilities were provided. The beds were very comfortable once we got up to them as they are about 3 foot off the ground! The room was not on suite making a journey to the toilet in a pub a sneaky challenge at night. As usual on the Dales Way the breakfast was very good. |
| Kendal - Union Tavern, 159 Stricklandgate, Kendal, LA9 4RF (Price: £30.00
single room, B&B, 2002) Tel: 01539 724004, Email:
uniontavern@hotels.activebooking.com A quiet pub away from the town centre. My single room was spacious enough but the decor wasn't the best I have come across. It was clean and en-suite. Tea and coffee making facilities were provided. There was no choice offered at breakfast as a full English was put in front of me without asking what I would like soon after I sat down. |
