Norwood's Waterside Walk, Sunday 11th May 2008

Norwood is a leading UK charity supporting children and families with learning disabilities or coping with social difficulties. We believe that regardless of disadvantage or disability, everyone should receive the support they need to reach their potential and enjoy life to the full. Every year we provide thousands of children and their families with vital, specialised care.

Over 200 years old, Norwood offers a wide range of over 120 specialist services delivered by approximately 1200 staff and around 650 dedicated volunteers. We support children and adults with a wide range of learning disabilities by providing housing, special education, employment and leisure services. We also support families that are in crisis, those facing social disadvantage and children who require fostering and adoption services, both in the UK and internationally.

This year's Waterside Walk will take place on May 11th in Virginia Waters, which is located at the south end of Windsor Great Park, Ascot.Once again we have options for either a 10 or 20 mile walk through the area.

Along the way there are a variety of picturesque landmarks such as a 100 foot totem pole, a man-made waterfall and part of a ruined city imported from North Africa.

It is a truly enchanting location and a beautifully scenic day out for the whole family.

Circuit of Bath Walk, Sunday 28th September 2008

Julian House Charity Walk

Homeless charity Julian House will be staging their eighth Circuit of Bath Walk on Sunday 28 September. The 20 mile circular route takes in some fantastic countryside on the edge of the city. Participants can do anywhere between 2 and 20 miles; thanks to the unique shuttle bus service that operates between start points throughout the day.

The route comprises public rights of way including Monkton Combe, Englishcombe, Newton St Loe, Upper Swainswick and Bathampton. Solsbury Hill, the Midford Valley and Woolley are just a few of the beautiful scenic highlights. Not only is this a great day out but participants will also be giving a welcome boost to the charity’s work. Although Julian House is best known for its busy Night Shelter, this is only one of services it provides for homeless men and women. Recognising that homelessness is not a single issue Julian House has developed new projects and facilities which aim to tackle the underlying problems which force men and women onto the streets.

Participants can start at any of the five check points, where detailed route instructions are supplied. For detailed information visit our webpage at: http://www.julianhouse.org.uk/support/circuitbath08.html

Charity Coast to Coast Walk, Start Sunday 5th August 2007

HolidayLets.Net are sponsoring two friends to walk the Coast to Coast Walk in order to raise money for a fantastic charity, the Make-A-Wish Foundation^® UK .

The Coast to Coast Walk is a 191.5 mile (307km) trail that runs from St Bees on the Irish Sea across the width of Northern England to the North Sea at Robin Hood's Bay. This spectacular two-week walk crosses three national parks - the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors. James and Ben Atter plan to walk 191miles coast-to-coast from St. Bees to Robin Hood's Bay. In the process they are hoping to raise £1000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation^® UK.

To cut down on costs and because they are slightly mad, James and Ben intend to camp their way across the country and so will be carrying very heavy rucksacks (containing all their equipment and supplies including tent and sleeping bags) for the duration of the walk making this demanding walk even more physically challenging. By James and Ben's reckoning, they should complete the walk in 12-14 days. The Make-A-Wish Foundation^® UK grants magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses. The charity was founded in the UK in 1986 and, since then, they have granted over 4,400 wishes HolidayLets.Net have given Jamie and Ben a helping hand to get them started by sponsoring them £200. They will also be donating £5 for every person who registers and pays on www.holidaylets.net while the boys are on their walk.

It's a great day out, the scenery is spectacular, and you'll be raising money for WaterAid too. The South West Coast Path Association (SWCPA) has divided 630 miles of Britain's most dramatic coastline, from Minehead to Poole, into 70 sections of between five and 15 miles in length. Some of the path sections are suitable for use by wheelchairs and buggies. This year we need the support of even more walkers, ramblers and hikers to cover each of the 70 paths in the hope of raising £70,000 for WaterAid. In total, we're looking for 350 teams of between two and seven people to walk each of these sections on the big day: Saturday 15 September 2007. The Mighty Malham Challenge, Saturday June 9th 2007

Sponsored by H20 Chemicals and Chevin Trek walking shop, Otley, The Mighty Malham Challenge is the 27th annual Sue Ryder Care Wheatfields Hospice sponsored walk and follows a brand new route! The walk will start from Kirkby Malham in the Yorkshire Dales on Saturday, June 9th, 2007 and takes in the stunning countryside around Malham. You can choose between three different routes: 6 miles approx, 14 miles approx or 20 miles approx. There really is a route to suit everybody from families to long distance walkers so why not take up the challenge?

The money raised from the walk will go to Sue Ryder Care Wheatfields Hospice. Wheatfields cares for and supports people with life threatening illnesses such as cancer. It costs more than £2 million a year to run the hospice and without fundraising events such as this, and the support and generosity of the public, we would be unable to provide people with the vital care and support they need. Last year's walk made more than £20,000 for the hospice and we are hoping to top that this year! You can help Wheatfields carry on providing people with the care and support they need by taking part and encouraging your friends and family to stretch their legs and collect sponsorship. Every penny you give will be greatly appreciated and will be used to help us care for our patients and their families both now and in the future.

Emmaus Homeless Charity Walk - April 14th, 2007

My name is Andy and I have got a team of 6 other guys assembled to do the Pennine way on April 14th 2007 and our aim is to complete the trek within 10 days. We are doing the hike for a homeless charity called Emmaus,we are based in Greenwich London. What Emmaus does is offers homeless men and women a place to live and work to do. The work that we do is to collect donated furniture and then recycle the items by selling them at affordable prices throughout the community. Emmaus is a non-profit charity, the reason for doing the hike is to try and raise money for a new van which is essential to us for collections and deliveries.

If anyone is interested in supporting our charity you can get in touch with us at emmaushike@yahoo.co.uk You can also phone the charity on 02083165398 Also if anyone would just like to give any extra knowledge about the Pennine way that would be great too. Thankyou for reading this page and I hope I will hear from some of you soon.

Heart Research UK - Stoodley Stagger

Event Date: Saturday 23 September, 2006

Have you got the stamina for the Stoodley Stagger? Local charity 'Heart Research UK' is challenging readers to participate in the 'Stoodley Stagger' a sponsored 14-mile walk, from Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire on Saturday 23 September 2006, starting at 7.30am. The event, helping to raise vital funds into fighting heart disease, which is still remains one of the UK's biggest killers, takes walkers through sections of the Pennine Way and Calderdale Way, passing through woodland and moorland, providing spectacular views of the South Pennines and Calder Valley. Historic landmarks along the way include; the remains of stone causeways, traces of a medieval settlement and the famous Stoodley Pike, a peace monument erected at the end of the Napoleonic war. The stunning views however come at a price, as the walk stretches a strenuous 14-miles across fields, along canal towpaths, riverbanks, and some pretty steep hills so this would be ideal for someone who is reasonably fit and looking for a challenge. The walk is fully supported by an experienced team of walk leaders and it is estimated to take 4-5 hours to complete. Julian Carter (37) from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, is taking part in the Stoodley Stagger as an incentive to get fit, "Having been reasonably active in my 20's, I have realised that in the last few years, I now spend most of my days sitting down! I have pledged to walk the Stoodley Stagger as a way of motivating myself to get out and about and be more active. My wife and I are not experienced walkers, but we are quite fit and we'll have a few practice walks over the next few weeks. I'll be thinking of my grandad, who developed heart problems in later life, to motivate me to keep going on the day."

Heart Research UK's Fundraising Manager, Derek Edwards, said, "We would like to hear from anyone who is interested in taking part and all walkers should register in advance, so we can send you all the information you need to take part. It is free to enter and we ask all walkers to raise as much sponsor money as possible"

Heart Research UK will make sure all money raised will go towards funding medical research into the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease in the Yorkshire region.

To sign up or to find out more information for the Stoodley Stagger contact Heart Research UK on 0113 234 7474 or visit our website and download an entry form www.heartresearch.org.uk/walking_events.htm

Heart Research UK is a visionary charity founded in 1967 by Mr Watson, a working heart surgeon, who realised that patients were dying unnecessarily because of the lack of research in heart disease, especially surgical techniques. Having funded six of the first eight UK heart transplants the charity leads the way funding medical research projects into the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease. There is a strong emphasis on supporting ground breaking clinical and surgical projects and young researchers on their first steps into research. The Charity currently funds over £2.3m of research projects at 32 hospitals and universities across the UK . In addition over £150,000 has been awarded to community-based lifestyle projects that aim to prevent or reduce the risks of heart disease.

Heart Research 'Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge'

Event Date: Saturday 17th June 2006

Heart Research UK invites you to take part in the Tenth Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.  For the last nine years, hundreds of walkers from all around the UK get together to face the exciting challenge of walking up the three highest peaks in Yorkshire, Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in the glorious Yorkshire Dales.  This 26 mile walk, ascending 1500 metres, provides you with fantastic views, a real sense of achievement and the opportunity to help national charity, Heart Research UK, in the fight against heart disease.

Britain's biggest killer
Most of us have been touched by heart disease in some way or another and often many walkers fundraise in memory of a loved one or in support of someone who is living with heart disease. Each year, the event attracts more than 700 walkers from all around the UK and this year we are aiming for 1,000 walkers. Please help us smash our record!

The more the merrier
Why not walk with your friends and family?  Or round up colleagues from work and/or university and walk as a team (University Challenge)? Your employer may match any funds raised and we will promote your organisation to the local press.  Let us know if you need more entry forms or you could forward this email onto all your contacts or add to your website or company intranet.

A decade of fundraising
Unlike many established fundraising events, Heart Research UK does not charge an entry fee to take part.  We simply ask all our walkers to raise as much sponsorship money as possible and people have told us that this helps to motivate them along the way, knowing that they are helping to fund research into the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease. Over the last nine years, the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge has raised more than £315,000 for Heart Research UK’s pioneering work.

What else can I do?
We welcome volunteers to help marshal, register walkers or help with many of the smaller jobs on the day.  Even if you are unable to take part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, you may be able to help promote the event. Please help us make this year’s challenge our best yet!

To register your interest: Call (0113) 234 7474 or email info@heartresearch.org.uk or download an entry form from www.heartresearch.org.uk/three_peaks.htm

BAWA Leisure Centre Bristol plan sponsored National Three Peaks Challenge

Event Date: TBA

We are a Bristol company who are looking to complete the three peaks challenge but not in the normal way! We want to walk it. Not as crazy as it sounds as we are doing it in relay fashion. Raised £7,000 last year trekking to Everest Base Camp and want to raise more money for charity. Plenty of volunteers amongst our employees. Do you have any advice as to how we could go about planning the route. Climb Ben Nevis, walk to Scafell Pike and climb that, walk to Snowden and climb that then walk back to Bristol. Estimate about 5 weeks with about 30 of us doing relays. The West Highland way looks the obvious start from Fort William to Glasgow. After that we seem a bit stuck? Would like to walk off road if possible but any safe route would be fine. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks, Alex and Lisa
