How These Calculations Are Made
The calculator adapts William Naismith's famous 1892 rule to reflect genuine, real-world hiking speeds agreed upon by seasoned walking community members. While Naismith assumes an athletic 3.0 mph (5.0 km/h) pace, the Walking Englishman baseline is a realistic 2.5 mph (4.0 km/h) leisure pace with scenery appreciation.
Age Grading: Trail observations show that pace slows naturally past age 60, with steeper reductions in our seventies and eighties as stride shortens and steep descents require knee protection. If you enter your age, this tool applies a gentle, continuous reduction to your walking and descent speed.
| Walker Age Bracket | Effective Flat Pace | Descent Rate (Imperial / Metric) |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 55 (Baseline) | 2.50 mph / 4.02 km/h | 1 min per 80 ft (25m) descent |
| 60–69 years | ~2.35 – 2.45 mph | 1 min per 72 ft (22m) descent |
| 70–79 years | ~2.05 – 2.25 mph | 1 min per 59 ft (18m) descent |
| 80+ years | ~1.65 – 1.95 mph | 1 min per 49 ft (15m) descent |
Ascent: Climbing time remains constant at 1 min per 33 ft (10m) ascent across all ages. Remember to allow extra margin when walking across pathless boggy moorland or during winter.
