Summary: The Carnic High Trail (Karnischer Höhenweg) is a 100 mile (160 kilometre) long distance footpath which runs through the Carnic Alps in northern Austria, close to the border with Italy. It is also part of the 'Way of Peace' long-distance hiking trail that traverses the former World War I frontline in Slovenia and Italy, connecting the Alps to the Adriatic Sea.

The Carnic High Trail is a high Alpine trek and can really only be walked comfortably in the summer between mid-July and the end of September. Any earlier, or later, will possibly require the use of winter gear including ice-spikes (crampons) and winter walking clothing. There are no really serious sections of walking to negotiate though there are a few places where steel cables and ladders need to be negotiated. However, these don't require any special equipment or technical expertise. Accommodation is available on a hut to hut itinerary if required, but thew huts will need to be booked in advance. Most walkers of the route camp during the walk.
